Les, I trust you and when I'm next in Harrogate ( a more affluent town than Scarborough ) I will be happy to be driven in your smoke-free taxi (but with substantial discount as a forum member and retired doctor ).
I think we're all agreed the evidence is there that passive smoking is a health hazard. What really is more difficult to answer is whether there is also evidence for smoking as a safety issue while driving.

... on BOTH counts!! Indeed, I'VE known drivers who deliberately *chain-smoke [not that I'm advocating anyone follows *THIS practice!] behind the wheel ... in order to stay fully-alert during long, monotonous journeys. But, there again, NO ONE should be when overtired!

Ash ... as a "reformed character" you are to be commended on your open-mindedness. Many in YOUR situation have bandied together to affiliate themselves with that ever-growing bunch of "pain-in-the-" anti- lobbyists who (for reasons) devised their logo ... 'ASH'.

for your kind compliment, Pete ... I DO indeed have the occasional flash of inspiration while puffing away at my favourite briar as I type. And yes, I well-remember the St Bruno ads featuring the Saint Bernard dog with the keg. Ahh ... those were the days ... before the "Nanny State" started its campaign to deprive us of life's little pleasures!!!

I dont remember the dog, thought it was the one where he selected a beautiful girl while puffing his pipe and his beefy assistant put her over his shoulder and carried her to the boat. I lose the plot sometimes.

Well if eating a chocolate bar means you are not in full control of your Jam Jar then surely smoking is to?

Used to smoke but gave up as it bored me and couldn't see the point of it. Now we have mobiles no need to have a time wasting smoke when waiting around..

The Wife smokes a few a day and she goes to the blooming Kitchen to smoke as to cold outside even during the heatwave I gotta say if i have to walk in just after she has smoked in the room i do find myself coughing.

We had a bit of a Central London Night club crawl last week and I have to say was nice to not stink of ash when we came out but some of the clubs have a right old whiff going on now sweat hair spray and over use of perfumes as do some pubs have some lovely stale beer smells etc..
So maybe they should bring it back
Oh lord why did you make so many clothes and shoe shops
