I thought I had contributed to this thread already but yes Microsoft Security Essentials is free lightweight (doesn't kill the computers processing power) appears to be effective and doesn't try to do a million additional things badly.
I've had it installed on my boxes for a long time now.
It does what it says on the tin it catches viruses.
