It's a well recognized term, although not yet in the Oxford English Dictionary (the new edition will only be available on line).
However, it need not happen. Your settings can be such that only your friends can access your site, you make sure you actually know your friends (it's said that 150 is the maximum anyone can expect to realistically retain as friends) ,only you know your password, and report immediately any loss or theft of cellphone or any other device with access to facebook.
I said recently on a now deleted thread I've never subscribed to any of these so called "social networking" sites as they are frequented by gossipers, con artists, wind up merchants, shysters, back stabbers etc.
I'm a busy man with a life to lead and have more important things to worry about than who's wallpapered my wall, invited me to pick their nose etc etc.
More trouble than they are worth as recent fall outs, bannings etc on here might indicate
There are some good ones for hobbyists Dedworth, like Flickr for photographers and I am a also member of a couple of small ones, one fairly private one for Scottish enthusiasts of a particular motor car, mostly good friends of mine
You get flame wars and arguments and fall outs on all of them even on Flickr but largely it's fairly civilized.
I have a fake hidden Facebook account, not in my name but only because my Scottish daughter asked me to get one about 5 years back (I think it was around then).
I was just not prepared to put that much info out there on myself on a site like FB although in reality I have probably posted more intimate personal information here.
I agree with you about Facebook though, I don't use it unless I need some data from it.
Flickr on the other hand has, for me, been a great place to make new friends, like minds and all that and filipinouk has been a life saver, in some ways, for me over the last year!

Another reason to avoid using these sites
Have mentioned this before, but in my line of work have seen people fired over facebook related incidents. It's far too dangerous, and far too much information. The press seem to be able to drag out all the photos and status reports for articles... scary
I'm a big fan of facebook,it's come in really useful at times and it's great knowing when friends/relatives have uploaded pics,helps with birthday reminders too
All you have to do is opt out of the many silly "I have sent you four parsnips-send me a cabbage back" games/requests.

But now and again i love a good football arguament (oops disagreement) and it's the best place to do it to wind each other up
Most of the time tho it's just laid back when I'm bored checking stuff out and for that it's the best.
I don't know a great deal about Facebook security I don't use the site, but it is possible that initial poor security on the part of individuals results in data getting into the google cache from where it is more or less impossible to remove it. (I mean the google page history cache not something local to your own PC).
I would guess they are using that kind of method to retrieve historic data.
im a BIG BIG fan of facebook too. it's where i found long, lost friends, faraway relatives, old classmates and so on. i just learned couple of years ago to make my page private and only add people i really know or referred by common friends (and now forum peeps).
it's just sad that they disabled my page now. i put in so much time and effort on my page. it's like they're holding my own stuff on hostage

Twitter scrambles to block worms
Twitter has patched a flaw in its website that was being exploited to pump out pop-up messages and links to porn sites.
Initially, users only had to move their mouse over a message containing a link - not click it - to open it in the browser.
The code was spread by worms, self-replicating, malicious pieces of code.
Thousands of users were caught out by the flaw, including Sarah Brown, the wife of the UK's former Prime Minister.
