MANILA - Philippine civil defence officials on Saturday put the country's north on notice for a typhoon that could hit the area early next week.
Typhoon Megi, packing sustained winds of 140 kilometres (87 miles) an hour near the centre, was churning slowly toward the northeast coast of the main island of Luzon, said government weather forecaster Leni Ruiz.
"It may eventually threaten extreme northern Luzon," he added.
The eye was plotted 980 kilometres off the coast at 9:00am (0100 GMT) and was expected to make landfall on Monday.
The category 1 typhoon was still too far away to affect any part of the country, the weather service said.
Tropical Storm Ketsana and Typhoon Parma struck Luzon within a week of each other in late September and early October last year, killing more than a thousand people.
i hope and pray that the weather forecast is wrong again!!!
After my sister almost died during Ondoy, I've been dreading news of more typhoons. I guess it's okay coz this time, there'll be more wind than rain, and she's safe in a sturdy building. Ondoy was just a whole lotta rain.
I hope everyone's families stay safe.
I just hope it misses my house and everyone is safe out there
If you want your dreams to come true ...... first you have to wake up
i was in the pearl manila hotel last year with wife and kids wen ondoy struck, next day we coudnt go outside hotel as water in the streets was up to peoples knees. and i was staying at the duck inn along del pilar st in 2006 wen reming hit and for me that was worse as it took part of the roof off, and had to find another hotel that was hard to find at the time, but lucky for me my family was in province down south..
This is the main reason why my missus never wants to move back to Marikina. After she was stranded in the apartment without power, water and the ability to cook for 5 days.
But this is a part of life in the Philippines, it's in a Typhoon area, and also in the Pacific Ring of Fire, with the associated Volcanoes and Earthquakes!
Personally, I wouldn't trade the Philippines' natural disasters for boring, no-excitement weather. Haha! I'm sure I sound crazy, but I happen to like typhoons, volcanoes and earthquakes. That being said, I'd like to suggest a can stove for the people with families in typhoon-prone areas. That link I just gave gives instructions for a stove using Heineken cans, but Coke cans work too.
Junior, you were lucky to just have knee-deep water. My sister has pictures of her house underwater up to its roof! The only thing that made me feel better last year was her email and how the tone of it wasn't too sad. Keeping your sense of humour trumps keeping your stuff. LOL.
looks like a cat 4 which Manila will largely escape..
My 12 year old girl and relatives stay in Illocos Sur, wish they go safely through this.
They are in a kind of valley, high up but mountains both side, and it is western part, thyphoon should be little bit slow down allready...
Stay safe all and i deeply wish for no casualty
Wow, that looks nasty! Umm, as bad as it sounds, I hope it settles around my home region if it doesn't go out to sea. Folks from Bicol are used to typhoons so it would be easier for them to handle this than it would be for folks in some of the other regions. Still, if it can be avoided, it would be much better if this made its way out of the Philippines instead.
is it true what i keep reading that the further south you live , the less chance off typhoons, like say cebu
In principle Steve yes.
Take a look at this:-

I just heard on the BBC weather that this typhoons 'Megi' is a real whopper.
We pray that this will not be a devastating as Ondoy and also we pray that our family in Marikina will be OK.
But we both getting worried now.
Essentially, true. The increased probability and severity of typhoons is likely further North. Typhoons can develop from anywhere between 5 degrees and 30 degrees North, and tend to move in a North Westerly direction before recurving North Easterly. If you want a full explanation, I will rack my brain from all those Met lessons and give some salty old seadog stories, aaaagh my hearties!
like i said emmas dad is in marikina and he was flooded the other year first time ever that happened as bad as it did, emma was there helping him clean after the fact , she will be concernd again
some thing to keep you busy there ricky, as long as all are safe and little damage done to the folk in its path then all off us will be happy
Well, advised family to keep food high and have ready food cans for the coming days...
Another good thing to have is torch light and spare battery, candle for after the wind is helpful too, some times there are few days without power ( or weeks )...
We touch wood that this one does not hurt anyone...
If you want your dreams to come true ...... first you have to wake up
That typhoon is huge and winds at 180 Knots per hour - 280 Km hour !
Last such was registered in 1990 says CNN...
Protect yourself people in Northern Luzon and we all hope for no casualties !
