Just wondering which books to look at / Purchase regarding Philippines,
In particular Tagalog and Culture
I would like to get a better understanding and more of a grounding on the language.
What to be aware of. Do's and donts.

Tagalog, is it better to try and learn from future gf / Wife. Or would it be more beneficial to start reading now?
The tesseract is in english,its just a book on Pinas I particularly enjoyed reading,I can also reccommend probably the most famous book in pinoy literature Noli Me Tangere,you can get the english version from Penguin books,I just picked my tagalog up from interaction with pinoys in Hong Kong and the Philippines,I didnt learn from a wife or girlfriend.

Maybe I should be thinking of learning Tagalog myself, Adam ... being married to a Filipina. But I'm ashamed to admit that 'Parliamo Glasgow' is more my scene ... having been born in that "Dear Green Place"!

and if you want to really learn tagalog your own way ,Filipino Komiks is the best to read.. i dunno if it still exist in the philippines (maybe you can still get a copy online) but 2-5 pages/read a day will help you learn a lot.

The book 'Imelda' (can't remember author) is a very interesting read, and gives a few clues to the Filipino psyche as well as some background to postwar Philippines history.
I borrowed it from the library.
Lonely Planet guide to the Philippines is excellent too.
The only book I have on the Philippines, is the 'Rough Guide'. My copy must have been a bit out of date, as on our trip to Boracay, I found in the book the perfect place to stay 'The Mona Lisa'... sounded just the job.
We arrived in the pouring rain, we asked the tricycle driver to take us to the 'Mona Lisa'he scratched his head, but proceeded anyway. He asked several other people along the way, they all scratched their heads as well
We eventially found where it had once been, all that was there, was a pile of bamboo.
I think LP is far superior to RG.
