His great grandfather WAS a Methodist Minister (married to an Irish Presbyterian).
Our family was very active in church circles, and in fact to this day both of my sisters are Sunday School teachers.
I was fascinated by all things scientific as a child, and a big fan of Darwin, so the man in the sky just had to go.
