Yes ... my maternal Gran had it too ... from her mid-80s onwards ... and lived on - more or less bedridden - until she was ninety-three! Wonder if it skips a generation?

Luckily ... she had my grandpa and eldest daughter to look after her, and didn't need to go into residential care!

Alzheimers disease seems to have touched so many lives and my own Mum was diagnosed with it at the age of 59 and lasted for 9 years before passing away (it's the anniversary of her death today).

Having visited a young persons dementia unit this evening and seeing the number of people under 65 suffering from this very wicked and debilitating disease, I feel saddened that there is still very little spent on research ............

It's far more common than most of us realise.

My mother passed away in 2007 she had received absolutely no support in 5 years

My paternal grandmother had it too.
Spent her last 5 years in hospital, but made it to 87.

Anyway...just let me write that down...

    Sorry for this, but.....
My elderly neighbour was mowing his lawn the other day without wearing any trousers.
    I asked him why.
He said it was his wife's idea, as the week before he mowed his lawn without wearing his scarf and got a very stiff neck

When I'm old and in need of stiffening up a bit, I know where to go to get a cheap supply of Viagra or Cialis...everytime I'm in Ph, the street hustlers offer me a variety of sunglasses, watches, Viagra, Cialis and a plentiful supply of girls........hmmmmm, do i look that old and desparate

I am 66 and do wonder if I am going down this path, more so when I go into a room and then cant remember why

I used to deliver meals in the Health Service to a unit with many people of all ages with Alzheimer’s; it is tragic to see someone with it.

The thread is in the "humour" section, but it's true that lack of funds is slowing researchers from prevention, better detection, and finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease. It's also clear that members are concerned about this condition which is responsible for possibly 2/3 of cases of dementia.

The true frequency is not known ( 18 million to 36 million estimated worldwide)
Much information is available on the UK Alzheimer's Society website (www.alzheimers.org.uk) or Alzheimer's Disease Association of the Philippines website (www.alzphilippines.com).
Memory loss alone is not Alzheimer's disease ! Diagnosis is difficult in the early stages, requiring GPs and specialists in the UK, who use "MMSE" (mini-mental state examination).
It's usually sporadic (less than 1% being inherited). The brain shrinks (atrophies) more than normally found with ageing, and amyloid protein is deposited, with impaired neurochemistry. Drugs may now be prescribed in UK - or bought in the Philippines - for treatment of early mild symptoms - they act by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. These include Donepezil, Galantamine, and Rivastigmine - but they are not a cure, and have side effects. So far there is NO cure.
How to avoid Alzheimer's disease ? You can do nothing about increasing age, and it's commoner in women. Good diet, regular exercise, moderate alcohol intake, and not smoking all help ...together with social interaction.
While Alzheimer's is among the commonest causes of dementia (others being cerebrovascular disease and "Lewy body" disease), onset at a young age could mean a different cause, possibly genetic and possibly treatable in different ways.

This thread is in the humour section because thats what it was intended for. Really, some folk really do want to get some sense of fun injected into them. I, like Terpe took it as humour. Terpe lost his Mum and I lost an ex father in law to this condition. The later had it from 42yo and died aged 76. He was a keen life long cyclist a moderate drinker. I believe, if its in your genes you are doomed. Thats it. Yes, like Doc Alan said, good all round living will help but, you can say that about any illness. Some how my ex father in law knew he was going to suffer the same fate as his mother and grand mother from an early age. How scary is that.

I had a problem with this thread because other members wanted a serious response. Should I ignore them, try (as always) to help, or add to the humour ? On a forum with 500 or so active members it's impossible to keep everyone happy ! Maybe the answer is to put me on your "ignore" list.
However, for those who do look for advice, the role of genes and Alzheimer's is NOT understood, nor is its cause. Until we do understand the cause(s), "good all round living" (as you put it) is the best way to reduce your chances of getting it . Read more on the links provided

My short-term memory is terrible now, so much so that it caused me real difficulties in my work for the last year or two. (Ever-changing and updating of regulations and paperwork, instantly forgetting addresses, names etc, missing appointments).

I just found out this morning that my friend and former work colleague was killed in a car accident the other day.

36 years old and a lovely guy who was so upset because of the limited access to his little boy, given by his ex- girlfriend. I'd kind of taken him under my wing.

Let's all appreciate what we have, and try to make the world a better place each day.
