Compulsory basic training (CBT) means what it says on the tin. Compulsory Training.
It was introduced in 1990 with the specific purpose to reduce really high levels of accidents by inexperienced motorcyclists. The CBT must be completed and certified before any moped or motorcycle learner driver is allowed to ride on the road.

Thanks for the info Terpe, it's a long time since I was 16 and my mates were all buzzing around on their 50cc hairdryers. Things have changed since then. Personally, I've never had a motorcycle, I prefer the security of 4 wheels and some metal around me
