If I recall correctly you are considering Unmarried Partner route, yes?
In this case it means just what is stated. That you will need to provide sufficient supporting evidence that both demonstrates and convinces the ECO that for the past 2 years you have been living together, just as if you were actually married. If there have been periods of separation you will need to explain the reasons (eg work related) they would need to be reasons that would also normally apply to a married couple.

What it proves is not relevant, its a visa requirement. Better to focus your energies on a positive.
As for explaining your periods of absences was due to work commitments on visit visas won't wash either.
They will quite rightly say, you should of got the correct visa in the first place, ie finance or spouse
