A sign of aging. For the last couple of days, the wife has been complaining that notebook suddenly shuts down automatically while she’s in the middle of browsing Facebook.

Inside is an exhaust fan that's nearly given up on me

I suspect that it’s an overheating issue as it has happened before to my Compaq Presario c765TU notebook which I bought way back in 2008.

However, the overheating problem has been more persistent as again, the wife reported that it caused the notebook to shutdown four times within a span of just three hours just the other day!

Come to think of it, today is the 3rd ‘birthday’ of my Compaq Presario notebook. An ominous sign perhaps that indeed it deserves some well-earned pampering by undergoing maintenance to replace a worn out exhaust fan and with it an extension of its service life span by a couple of years, which would just be enough time to enable me to save enough money to buy a replacement. Or at least find a way to get a replacement notebook.

So now I’m on the hunt for an HP Service Center, I have a vague idea that there’s one in Makati City but thankfully, a few friends of mine chimed in on my Facebook wall giving me a heads up that there’s one in Robinson’s Place Imus, Cavite.

Before that, I went ahead and looked for other laptop services and found PinoyLaptops.com which offers a wide range of laptop/notebook repair services. Of course there are others that a Google search will give but it’s either that or HP Service Center in the Philippines.

I want to keep the costs of replacing the exhaust fan reasonably low but not to the extent that it would just give me more headaches and a more broken notebook a few months or weeks down the line.

So on Wednesday, I’m off to Robinson’s Place Imus to check out the HP Service Center there, or maybe an accredited partner. If that doesn’t work out, then it’s off to one of their Service Centers in Makati City.

For now, an alternating use of the air conditioning unit and an electric fan is used to keep my notebook from overheating. Hopefully, a replacement of the exhaust fan would solve this problem for good.

huh? ur going to look for a repair/replacement? from a pinoy service centre?

Look on youtube for instructions how to open the back of your laptop - get a soft long headed bristle brush and a few drinking straws and just take out the little cpu fan and dust it clean and blow all the extra buildup of dust from around the vents and cpu area.

Having lived in Iligan for over 2yrs and having to regularly clean the inside of my laptop (3 times a year) becoz of dust accumulation - I saved 1000's of pesos.

When in normal use keep a fan pointed towards ur laptop most times (of possible) or restpad with fitted cooling fan. Always ensure good ventilation if not. No nice hand made tablecloths or resting on pillows - this will cause overheating.

I have recently been updating, repairing, installing and maintaining 2 laptops one in USA and one in Basey at the same time - same day - unfortunately doing things that need on hand (actual site work) is beyond my means otherwise I would be willing to help.

It's not hard to clean your own laptop/pc - it can be delicate but for me it's better risk than passing it onto pinoy service centre and free.

If you use the 'laptop' on your lap or on a soft surface its likely to overheat as there may not be any air getting from the fan if its located underneath. Best to make sure its on a hard surface then maybe it wont overheat. I have found this problem with other makes of laptop.

You should ALWAYS have a cooler fan under a laptop to prolong its life.

This video is for a different make of laptop but it shows how easy it is to clean inside once you know how to open - so search for your respective laptop model to strip down the back then just do the same as this vid - all good!!!

I used to find that the games consoles suffered from overheating in Phils too.

Big fan trained on anything electrical like that (power amp, for instance) kept things under control.

Nearly as bad as the RAT that had taken up residence in our new cooker in the Phils, and having chewed through all the wires was lucky not to have been fried.

Didn't take long for our dog to despatch it though.

I also found an ants' nest in my shaver...which obviously I hadn't used for a while.

I soon learned that anything, large or small, not to be used for a while in the Phils was best securely bagged up in an airtight bag.

Best one was in Hong Kong, where I woke up one morning to find that a rat had chewed a hole about the size of a rat's head through my plastic lunchbox, and had my bloody sandwiches away !
The box was maybe a foot from my head !

Now anything remotely edible goes in the fridge when I'm in the tropics...including that old favourite...sugar.

    rats

i was in our shed and i could hear something moving on the top shelves, then i saw a rat/mouse climb in a cardboard box, i put a hammer on top of the box so it couldn't get out , and as the bin men had been the day b4, i got our wheelie bin, took it inside the shed, and grabbed the box and emptied it in the wheelie bin, it was a big rat ...

told the misses she said fill the bin with water and it will drown , couldn't do that, thought of buying rat poison stepson said throw a big brick on it , the little bugger was squealing like a pig every time i looked into the bin, and it kept trying to jump out, the thing jumped like a frog, it was just a few inches short of getting out

being a veggy and not liking the ways my misses and stepson had for killing it, after 12hrs or so,i kicked the bin over and its the last i saw of ratty
