BMI is only one "body stat" which is correlated with body fat, but it neither measures fat directly nor does it take account of its distribution ( waist circumference being a better indicator of risks from obesity ).
BMI , for what it's worth, is calculated as : (weight in kilograms) / (height in metres) squared.
You will need a calculator, but in "old units" it's either :
(weight in pounds) X 703 / (height in inches) squared .... or :
(weight in pounds) X 4.88 / (height in feet) squared.
BMI is of most use in adults, but not body builders, athletes, pregnancy, or elderly. It's also hard to interpret in children and adolescents. Where it applies, here are the "figures" :-
Underweight = less than 18.5
Target weight = 18.5 - 25
Overweight = 25 - 30
Obese = 30 - 40
Morbidly obese = over 40.
