    This morning I had my first sea swim at Scarborough - no wetsuit, and RNLI on standby ( my son is a lifeguard ) . It lasted 15 minutes max, but you have to respect my "trusted" status as I have no photos to prove it !
    The North Sea temperature right now is around 12 Centigrade, and it's not much more anywhere else on the UK coast ( 15 around Channel Islands ). In the Philippines it's 28, much the same as indoor pool temperatures here .
    Sudden immersion in the sea off the UK, or our rivers / reservoirs can lead to cardiac arrest from immersion before there's time to drown . It all depends on age, general health ( and alcohol levels ) - I've survived to post this news .

    Well done on the swim Doc
    Won't catch me in the sea in uk too bloody cold
    Well it's my run night and it's so warm it is going to be tough and I cant see me improving my time,maybe it's just best to do it steady tonight and not worry about my time

    I'm on recovery mode (excuses) for today- I'm shattered! Today at work I couldn't wait to finish the day and go straight home to relax!
    It is very warm and humid it doesn't really helps (more excuses)

    No I could not resist so did my first short bike ride in 10 years
    Pleased with it as I picked the steepest route in Harrogate but that was hard the only consolation was whizzing down the hills but i was bricking it

    That's a good ride for a start

    You better get a pair of padded shorts for long distance ride- now you will be hooked on cycling and there is no turning back! What bike did you get? is it a road bike?

    It's a Hybrid bike,I'm saddle sore now
    I want a nicer saddle thats for sure
    Enjoyed the test ride but why I always have to try the hardest route beats me see the steepness of the hills!
    It's the run tommorow though when i get back from my London job.

    Climbing hills is going to be a challenge, I usually hates it when I first started I gradually built up my endurance -all of it is bloody hard work but there is nothing compare to the feeling you get after a long hard work ride I feel proud of the achievement I did!

    With a good saddle and padded short you will be more comfy and long distance ride will be easy peasy.

    We have a guest here at the moment who has one of these blood pressure machines..The whole family have used it and we are all within the normal range..Between 120 and 135..
    When you have a 2 hectare garden and have to carry 5 gallon drums of water around etc exercise comes with the territory!!
    Now I say we were ALL in the normal range but thats not strictly true..
    My 58 year old brother in laws blood pressure constantly reads between 205 and 214 over 165 !!
    The machine takes far longer to calculate his blood pressure..Obviously!!
    He doesn't seem very worried about it as he reckons its been that high since 1987 when his application to work in Libya was refused for failing the medical..
    He shows absolutely no symptoms or signs of illness and the local doctors are amazed at why he is not having a heart attack..
    What do you reckon Doc?

    You're right about the exercise ! People who do manual work, especially in a hot climate, may have neither the energy nor need to take recreational exercise .
    As for your brother-in-law, if the "blood pressure machine" is validated (www.bhsoc.org/how_to_measure_blood_pressure.stm), then it's too high, even without obvious symptoms or signs. It needs investigation and treatment IMO. Rather than "hijack" this thread, I'll post a separate one under "Health Issues" .

    Your bottom just needs 'running in'.....always like that when you haven't cycled for a while.

    Run in a few mins want to beat 1.29.12 I sound like I'm a serious athlete posting my time.
    Feel tired after my trip to potters bar though so lets see if that transpires into a rubbish run!

    Day 8 of my gym workouts, just done another 30 minutes in my garage/gym. I've managed to do 6 20-30 minute sessions in the last 8 days, and always try to do 100 sit ups a day, 50 in the morning and another 50 in the evening. Even after a week I can feel it's starting to do some good, feeling more toned up and less saggy already

    At some point I want to start my Multigym but I'm concentrating on the fitness/weight loss first

    The hardest part was motivating myself to start, now I'm in the swing of it, it's becoming addictive and I don't look for excuses not to do it tonight.

    Good luck with your exercises too Les cycling and running looks like too much hard work for me at the moment, but I might give it a go if I can pack up smoking first. I think it will kill me if I keep on smokiing.

    I can't offer any advice on weight loss other than take in less calories than you use in a day, and try to avoid anything high in sugar and saturated fat, and if possible only eat food you prepare yourself, ie salad, veg and meat or fish (nothing manufactured or processed). I started reading food labels a few years ago and it's scary how much sugar is in some of the things we eat. Processed food is the worst for sugar content, especially the one that clain they are low fat sometimes they can be upto 40 or 50% sugar I was 14.2 stone ten years ago, and I'm now 11.6I did get down to 10.13 last year but that was too skinny and have bulked up a bit since I've been doing a few exercises on and off over the last yr.

    I had an hour's cycle ride yesterday, no more sea swimming ( too cold ), my bottom is "run in" thanks Graham .

    I just put my foot in the freezing water once, and that was enough.

    Thanks for reminding me about swimming though Doc, something I do enjoy at the pool, and I think a great exercise for general toning up, plus of course a heart and lung workout.

    I hope to swim in the North Sea again this summer, but probably not on Christmas Day .
    The Scarborough area no longer has an outdoor pool ( lido ), a sign of changing times, and it's true we're used to swimming in warmer water these days. The nearest lido is at Ilkley, West Yorkshire ( unheated, but next to an indoor pool ), although there are a surprising number of lidos still open around the UK .http://homepage.ntlworld.com/oliver....dos/index.html

    Just been for my latest 6 miler-10 mins slower :(
    Back of ankle started hurting after first mile and the heat was tough but at least I completed it
