I was looking for the Filipina Dreamgirls movie (made when I was also in Manila), so just to keep things on topic for you Les...here's one of my fave movies...and really quite true to life at that time. :

    Filipina Dreamgirls movie
I love that movie,or maybe it was just the era,at one time or another I have met caricatures of each of the characters in pinas

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.

It was really true-to- life (at that time) too, that's what impressed me.

Apparently the researchers spent 3 months or more living in Manila and other locations, mixing with expats, to ensure an accurate portrayal, apart from the actual on-location filming.

I had just started the relationship with the ex at that time, and in Manila, so quite poignant.

That was the days of the marriage-clubs,I was only a kid but went into one of the offices to view their catalogue with an old taxi-driver from Brighton,he was a character, everyone called him Bill but his real name was derek,I would like to think he is still alive and growing old disgracefully in Pinas somewhere
