I have been through a similar situation to you and your partner....me working away for long periods, with wife and children in the Phils, then all needing to return to UK (for childrens' education).
In my case I went on ahead back to UK to arrange a job, and accommodation for the family. I had bank records from my Hong Kong bank.
Then I was able to satisfy visa requirements for bringing over my 2 stepchildren as dependants of my wife, who already had settlement visa for UK.
