    Government launches consultation on family migration

    The government has today announced proposals to crack down on sham and forced marriages, as part of a new consultation on better family migration.

    'Our message is clear - we will not tolerate abuses. And if you cannot support your foreign spouse or partner, you cannot expect the taxpayer to do it for you.'

    Introducing a new minimum income threshold for sponsors of partners and dependants, to ensure that family migrants are adequately supported as a basis for integration - the independent Migration Advisory Committee has been asked to advise on what the threshold should be;

    extending the probationary period before partners can apply for settlement in the UK from 2 years to 5 years, to test that relationships are genuine and to encourage integration into British life;

    reviewing the full right of appeal for family visitor visas, and inviting views on whether there are circumstances (beyond race discrimination and human rights grounds) in which an appeal right should be retained.

    'That includes too many times when we have seen Article 8 used to place the rights of criminals and illegal migrants above the rights of the British public. That balance must be redressed where there is a clear public interest in removing someone from the UK.

    the screw turns again, looks like things are getting even more difficult for some

    true Steve and some members on here cannot bring their partner here because they don't have savings or a permanent job, so with the suggestion of a minimum income, i can only see more people struggling

    what really me off, everyday you read about article 8, human rights, a court rules the gov cant deport a terrorist or criminal, or you read about foreigners abusing the benefits system, yet where are these courts ruling, when a British citizen has to jump thru loops and provide everything but a kitchen sink to bring their partner to the UK

    thanks terpe, i missed the thread, i don't get to access the forum for long at work, so i miss some of the posts,

    whats more worrying is the 5yrs to get ilr, its like a prison sentence waiting for the day

    this country is just , when a european can come to the uk and bring who they want yet a british citizen doesn't even have a right to bring their partner,,

    i don't think it will be so easy for the gov to extend the probationary period to 5yrs or have a minimum income, its not what you earn, its what you spend and can save, you could be on £50-100,000 a year and still have nothing left at the end of the month, i can see a few challenges in the courts, waiting for the court s verdict about raising the minimum age to 21yrs old. article 8 will be a problem i think for the gov.
