@Month’s worth of rain falls on Albay in 1 dayabs-cbnNEWS.com
    Posted at 07/26/2011 10:48 AM | Updated as of 07/26/2011 11:16 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The provincial government of Albay has ordered the evacuation of over 107,000 families after a month's worth of rain fell in the province in a single day, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said Tuesday.
Salceda said the province recorded 295 mm of rain for the past 24 hours, which is above the normal average of 279 mm of rain for the whole month of July.
"In one day, we got all the water we needed for 1 month. That's how bad it is," he told Mornings@ANC.
Salceda said the rain started at 11:15 a.m. Monday then started to intensify at around 10 p.m.
He said residents have been ordered to seek higher ground and use barangay halls, chapels and schools as temporary evacuation centers.
He said that aside from the rain, there is also risk of lahar flows in areas near Mayon Volcano.
A report from ABS-CBN Bicol Correspondent Thea Omelan said waist-deep floods have reached parts of Legazpi City including the national highway after the Busay River overflowed. She said some residents of barangays Culiat and Bungalon in Daraga lost their homes after floods hit the town.
At least one hotel has already placed sandbags in front of their building to stem the rising flood, the report said. Local officials also warned residents against trying to cross flooded areas because of the strong current.
Salceda, meanwhile, chastised weather bureau PAGASA for not raising the proper Storm Warning Signal in Albay on Monday. He said Storm Warning Signal no. 2 was only raised over Albay this morning.
"Now they have upgraded us to Signal No. 2. It is not a warning but a description. It is more stormy than ever," he said
