    Help and Ideas please!!

I'm awake (aside from our baby needing feeding) because I am struggling with how to raise funds for a family back in the Philippines, in desperate need.

A family we are close to has a 9 year old son, Klint, who is paraplegic and severely impaired mentally although he can express emotion, including annoyance with his eyes
He has been carried in the arms of his parents since the day he was born. Anyone who has carried even a 1-year old baby for half an hour can imagine what that could be like.

His parents are poor but have been totally devoted to that boy since he was born. It's been very humbling to see their love for him.

They now have a fully abled baby to contend with which means that frequently Klint has to be lain down where ever the parents cn find space in order to meet the baby's needs. Adding to that, the mother is small and can no longer hold Klint for long periods.

He needs a specialist wheelchair to support his body and low him a better quality of life. He gets excited when he sees children playing and being able to hold his head steady and watch them would really make a difference to him.

I'm not asking for money at this tage but would welcome any contributions anyone would like to make. I'll even shave my legs (be nice) etc if sponsored.

What I really need is thoughts on how to raise the money required. We will visit his family in December and would love to present them with the wheelchair which would make such a difference to their lives.

Thanks for sharing this with us Piamed.

There are lots of ways you can raise money to help out, a sponsored event being the most obvious. However, I guess that depends on your fitness and bravery

I'm sure others can think of many more, but here are a few starters:

    Parachute jump/skydive
    Fun run or half marathon
Cycling event - either miles travelled or point to point
Raffle/tombola at your local pub, club, football team, school, church ...etc

In order to maximise your chances of raising funds, good publicity is important, it might be worth you speaking to your local radio station, newspaper, newsletter, church, sports centre ...etc

However you decide to proceed, very best of luck to you, and I for one think you are doing a very compasionate thing. Sadly, most of us, including me are too wrapped up in our own little world and problems to help out a fellow human who is less fortunate than ourselves.

Thanks for suggestions matey. So far I'm going to suffer excruciating pain and get my legs waxed. I have mixed emotions about our dear friends in Leeds being willing to pay money to see me go through trauma

I used to know John Caudwell. I'll be contacting him tomorrow to see if he will help through his foundation.

I must admit I agonised before asking for help as we've all got problems and it's hard to justify helping people we don't know but I felt that even if a few helped it could be enough.

I'm always asked to help folk and I also have to choose who and how I help. In this case I know Klint and the family and have seen their struggle over the years.

Sadly, it never once occurred me to try to help in this way until I heard that he now has epilepsy and that the family are really going through hardships.
