    Where is home?

As we grow up, we move from town to town, and many people here have moved to different continents. We all have different ideas of where home is.

Is it where you live now, your birthplace, where you grew up...etc?

For me, I'm English (British) and proud of my British status and British tradition. I've travelled a lot of the world and seen many places I'd like to settle when I retire, but my home will always be the small Lincolnshire town I was born in, even though I haven't lived there for 37 years.

Seems that migration is normal, whether within the UK or abroad. For me, as much as I love the English countryside and the general way of life in the smaller towns, I feel the country is going downhill and don't see a future in the UK for me.

Originally I'm from Doncaster in Yorkshire. Have travelled pretty much constantly since I left school, from the Artic to the Antarctic, and haven't really lived in the UK for the last 5 years. As many of the forumites know, I've lived in the Philippines (both Manila and Cebu) and a recent move sees me living in Muscat, Oman.

When we move on from here, I guess Aussie or NZ will be the next place to try.

I think for me 'home' is the place where I grew up, where all my childhood friends were and where I have all my memories of growing up and adventures. I was born in a large town in south Somerset, but when I was 4 we moved to a village in the country and my parents (and me) still live there.
There are hardly any people there I once knew, times have changed, people come and go, but it is the place I know best and feel comfortable in. It will always be home.
On the other hand, I have my home with my asawa ko in Phils now, I feel comfortable there also, I do not feel intimidated or pressured when I am there, I can relax and enjoy my loving family there. They say 'Home is where the heart is' and my heart is currently 7000 miles away

Although I've lived in York on and off since the age of 15, I regard myself as a Pontefract lad, as that's where I can still see the house that my dad was born in, and where most of my relations are from.

It was a bit spooky when I was able to show my son a gravestone in a village church near Ponte, from the 1800s and with 'his' name on it (ancestor).

It has been a tradition in our family to give that name to the eldest son...as with my elder brother, father and grandfather.

My brother has so far traced our paternal ancestors back to the 1500s, and our maternal side back nearly as far.

There is a bridge in Harrogate named after one of my ancestors.

Here I am showing my son the rather interesting stately home where his dad was born.

I'm with you on this Steve I grew up in a safe semi rural environment, and have a lot of happy memories from my younger years. My family all still live in the same area, so naturally it feels like home to me. There is also a desire to move back to that part of the country when I retire. Perhaps it's like the salmon who returns to it's birthplace to die (I don't want to get morbid about this as I hope I've got another 40 yrs).
My home really is where I live now, where my life is, work is, my personal things are and more importantly where my children are. I guess ultimately that my home will always be close to wherever my kids and any future grandchildren will be.
As for moving to warmer climes, I have no desire to leave the UK for good, 4-6 months over winter each year is what I want. Britain in spring, summer and early autumn is the most beautiful place in the world, despite the weather

Nice one Graham Like your family, mine also go back 500 or so years in a small North Western Cambs village, although I don't regard that village as home as I've never lived there. My dad moved out of the village and 10 miles up the A1 into South Lincs. My paternal grandparents lived in the same village all of their lives.

Good post Englishman. As for me I am English (British) I used to be proud to call myself that but in the past few years its not the country I used to know. (I might get some stick for that) but thats the way i feel. Like I have said in one of my post my aim is to retire in the phillipines. I have lived in the black country all my life and seen the changes. Dont get me wrong there is still some untouched and scenic places in britain. I have travelled europe and the states but nowhere as appealed to me like the phillipines. Well thats me done!.

Some very good answers, we all have our own interpretation of where home is

Wherever you call home or plan to make your eventual home, I hope all of your dreams come true and you can enjoy your home with the people you love the most

Quite a poser, Ian! But ... north, south, east or west ... home's BEST! However, "home" is also "where the lies. And for ME ... it is well and truly the house - and town - where I've lived for the past 43 years. So many memories ... some ... others less so ... but that's life!

Wherever I lay my hat thats my home!

I was born in the Soth East but have not lived there since I was 17, my family are still there and visit often but it does not feel like home anymore.

We are now here in the North East with the wife and kids and although we have only been here a couple of years, the kids are in school and we feel nice and settled here.

Home is where my family is, where I am at peace, I have my privacy, I am myself, where I am comfortable and at ease. It's not necessarily where I grew up, in the university campus where we live since I was a child, especially that my parents live now in the farm they bought years ago. Every time I take my vacation, I usually go where my parents are, may they be in the farm or in the campus. My family is my home. I also call the university where I'm working as my home. I've lived in different places here in Visayas but I always come back here in the university. It is because I am at home here, where everything is possible too, and where my friends are. Now I have my own life, my family here are my friends.

I am from London but having lived in Spain for 24 years, this (Spain) is now home.

Bit of a problem last week though when the two countries meet at Wembley !

Home The word evokes a place of residence, thats it really, never been a homebody,I was dragged-up in the north-east and became homesick from a young-age,sick of home that is I suppose the best place I have found to live in the UK is beside the thames,I like this area, actually like it,its peacefull and relaxing, but its not long term home, some stones just keep rolling and gather no moss, home is wherever really

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.
