The real key to financial standing is having a regular income above income support level.
For a couple that level is £106 per week for discretionary spending.
Means with no rent or mortgage, no secured credit/loan and no council tax.

I've only ever known of 1 case where independent savings was the only financial support
mechanism. I don't know exactly how much in cash savings he had, but he intimated it was in excess of £100,000.
