Don't get too worried about savings either. In many ways it's a bit of a myth that you absolutely must show plenty of savings. Maintenance (sufficient funding) can be proven by reference to both savings and/or regular income. However, most of those who have gone though the Spouse Visa process would advise on having some savings.
It costs quite a bit to cover the Visa Application, Air fares, and supporting someone in actual settlement in UK. It would be reasonable for any ECO to expect something like £2000 in the form of savings.
Although some members here have secured a visa with hardly any.
Submission of 6 months bank statements and pay slips will be just fine, provided they tell the story the ECO wants to know. Namely that your sponsor can afford you.
You sponsor must take care to show he is not living beyond his means. Please avoid overdrawn bank statements, they raise more issues to explain.
