Here's wishing you a great trip, and hopefully you'll bring us some equally great photos back.

That lens isn't cheap! Good size lens though and covers most what you need. Think you can also get an 18-300 one! Would be interested to see what the results are like. Used to have a Sigma 18-200 on the Canon 450D I had before the Nikon, but it wasn't so great. Got an 18-105 now which came with the camera and is ok for most things, but could do with getting closer sometimes.

    Anyway, hope you enjoy it!

Hi Steve, I bought my wife a DSLR for her birthday with an 18-55 lens. (I am pretty clueless with cameras). She doesnt want to take close ups of bumps on the beach LOL but she does want to take a few pics in the distance as if they are closer up.......presumably an 18-200 would be what she needs for that?

indeed, we have had our camera a year so we thought lets get a bigger lens but also keep the close ups too, rather then keep taking the lens off, may damaged it drop it or get dirt in the camera , so we got this one, so far so good

BTW, from which shop did you buy the lens? We have a Jessops here on the island, but thats it. Might look for a better price on the mainland.....

£169?! How did you manage that, as it's around £580+ at the cheapest!:

Edit: Ah, I thought you meant you got the Nikon one, but seen you meant a lens for you Nikon camera, so yeah you can get other brands for cheaper.

Ah. So does that mean any brand of lens will fit any camera, sort of thing?

Nope, for say Canon, only Canon and companies that mainly make lens dedicated to the brand of camera that you have such as Sigma, Tamron and Vivitar etc will fit. Of course own brand ones such as Canon or Nikon will mostly be better, but you'll pay for that. But every company that makes lens will have some good ones, amazing ones, but also not so great ones. You need to look up on reviews of the one that you're thinking of buying to see what that actual quality of it is like.

no could never afford a nikon and i cannot justify the cost, so its a tamron, and for me that will be a good start

just check what you need and what you can afford, why spend more money on something that may only get used so many times, and to many of us the quality of the pictures most cannot tell what it was took by, goodluck

Hers is a Sony..cheap end of the DSLR range. She uses it a lot as she is a Facebook addict. She wants to take pictures, a bit like yourself, of objects / people / buildings etc that are a bit further away looking nearer in the picture - more to the fore. So I guess an 18-200 will do the job......
