Why do my cakes not rise in the Phils

I have been baking cakes for years in the uk with no problems but here in the Phils they won't rise, what am I doing wrong or is it the Phils flour. In the uk I bake with electric oven, here I bake with gas thats the only difference. HELP
Also, where can I buy Golden Syrup in Davao??????

Its to do with the flour Keith. Were you able to buy self raising or did you have to buy baking powder and mix it? We have had the same problem.

i am from davao..the only problem you got that i could think off is the type of flour you been using? was it all purpose flour..or cake flour..did you add yeast on it..??

golden syrup i dont think so there is one on one of the mall there..in mcdonlad they have syrup for pancakes/hotcakes ..if your in mall try to look in imported section not golden syrup similar product you could find..but if in ph we normally go that we call it maple syrup

Put some viagra in your cakes, that will make them raise

The touts and hawkers outside the girlie bars seems to have plentiful supplies

Not a culinary expert but I also think that the LPG gas here doesnt burn as hot as a UK gas oven. I tried to do some roastie spuds and even on full heat on the top shelf they never quite made it.

i guess flour in ph is categorize 1st,2nd,3rd class.
I did simple baking back home it do rise with baking powder in fact it made a crack in the middle, which means it is perfectly done.
seriously, when checking if your baking powder is ok, get a cup, put a little water, put a little bit of baking powder and try to put it close to your ears. If you hear a little bit of noise then it is usable.
Hope it helps. Im not an expert though

Hi Keith Britten! i also baked some cakes but i guess you must choose the cake flour cause if you use the all-purpose-flour you have to put still a baking powder or sometimes yeast so it will rise .... That's all i can think about your problem .... And about the syrup im not familiar in Davao so i can't help you there hehehe

Goodluck in your cake hope it will rise soon hehehehe
