These are examples of " nominative determinism " - the theory that a person's name has some influence over what they do ( or don't do ) in their life.
Possibly the best known in the Philippines was the late Cardinal Sin, former Archbishop of Manila, who played a role in the " People Power Revolution " resulting in the end of Ferdinand Marcos's regime 25 years ago. His first name was Jaime ( J'aime = I love in French ).
There are many examples in all walks of life. I knew a Dr. Bodger ; others include a Dr. Richard ( Dick ) Chopp who does vasectomies ; weather forecasters called Amy Freeze and Storm Field ; a dentist called Randall Toothaker ; a Russian springboard diver Svetlana Filippova and hurdler Marina Stepanova ; an Israeli tennis player Anna Smashnova ; Anne and Frank Webb of the British Tarantula Society ; solicitors called Argue and Phibbs ; and friends who took their chance to write in the Christmas edition of " Private Eye ", called ( Miss ) L. Toe and Wein .
