My point is this £26k is not that much money to earn these days and anyone bringing in a spouse to live here in the uk with them needs to be able to prove they can support her

Yes, except that you WON'T necessarily need to support your SPOUSE anyway, as they are permitted to work from day one.

Well she will not be able to work from day 1 because she will need to apply for a national insurance number first and finding work is not so easy now in the uk
