Of course. Pink Floyd.......
Of course. Pink Floyd.......
how many people can claim to have been successful in the music industry, but to do it not once with the Jam, then with the Style Council and then on his own, 3 times is rare, i can only think of Paul McCartney with the Beatles, wings and own his own..
weller is up their with the bestfor me better than the Beatles

I understand where you're coming from Joe, but actually I was well into the music of that (Paul Weller's) time, and I enjoy most of the current stuff too.....my advancing years not having altered my 25 year-old mentality at all.
I was just never particularly moved by Mr.Weller.
Sex Pistols yes, Ramones, New York Dolls, The Damned, Undertones and many others.

and here to me is one of the best rock tracks ever...
.
QueenSaw then in Bingley Hall Stafford.. THey are absolute Legends!!!!! Look at the Live aid Gig !!!! They stole the show!!!!!!! Talented and Unique!!!
Another one of my favourites....watch the video.

I've never heard of anything by Prince Buster. I'm not a big fan of Barrington Levy although one of my fave tracks is from him, Vibes Is Right, which ironically isn't a reggae track.
I quite like Luciano especially tracks like Psalm 24 & Come On Over.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned some of the heavyweights like Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Dennis Brown , Gregory Isaacs etc
Have you heard of a guy called Nasio Fontaine? Underrated and very Marley-esque and still performing. Also a band called The Gladiators who again are very underrated. And then there's Hugh Mundell.
I quite like Paul Weller but cant really say he is in the same league as the Beatles. I suppose it helps if one has lived through the various eras but I cant think of another UK band that had as much impact on the UK peoples every day lives as the Beatles, not before or since. Turn around for 5 minutes and there was another hit released - I distinctly remember that.
"During the week of 4 April 1964, The Beatles held twelve positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including the top five positions. Neither feat has been matched by any other artist to date."
I quote from a website I have just googled....
"No rock ‘n roll group had more influence on a generation and the world as did The Beatles. They single handedly changed the period known as the ‘Sixties’ and their influence is still being felt today. Music, culture, lifestyles, hairstyles, clothing styles and attitudes all changed because of this remarkable band that emerged out of Liverpool England in the early 1960s."
In a time when there isnt so much to be proud about, the Beatles make me proud to be British, along with Alf Garnett(Just jestin about Alf)
Having said that I prefer the music of the Who.
What do Elton John, Rod Stewart and the Who got in common? They each did a great version of Pinball Wizard. I saw Rod Stewart and Elton John each perform it seperately live. I never saw the Who live, though saw Quadrophenia when it first came out.
I think Jamie said, who was there before the Beatles? Well what about Sir Cliff and Hank Marvin eh?![]()
I would put Jools Holland in the same league. Not only that, I would place him on the top.
His career includes:-
Squeeze
Solo Career
The Jools Holland Big Band
The Rhythm And Blues Orchestra
TV music shows such as The Tube, Later... with Jools Holland and his annual New Year pary
As an accomplished musician, song-writer, music producer and TV host he has worked with and influenced a huge number and variety of 'the musical greats'.
Not my link, that was posted by Les.
But I thought it was a good link.
Just like a few others before them 'The Beatles' influenced music and popular culture hugely.
It really depends how you define 'Top ever bands', it's subjective and we all have different ideas. On a solely objective level the Beatles are clearly up there at the 'top' in so many areas, there can be no argument about that, based on the facts.
If you are up in the North West then how about a visit to the Beatles museum. Well worth a visit. You could easily spend a whole day there including the other satellite sites. My wife enjoyed it and although she wasnt really fully aware of the Beatles, she was familiar with many of their songs and didnt realise their origin.
If you aren't from the era you can begin to appreciate the scale of their impact when going around the "caverns".

( Evidently the Beatles are now on the National Curriculum.)
Its very popular, by the way. We had to queue to get in.
Anybody know where the Paul Weller Museum is?
Oh. The Boomtown rats. Saw them as newbies too. What an impact Sir Bob (Give us yermoney) Geldorf has had.
