I've sent 'wind-up' torches, lanterns and radios to Philippines.

As the write up says, it's basically 'old' technology, but with a new application.

I thought this was a very interesting idea, especially when disruption to power supply is commonplace.

Hehe. The wind up torch. I had one of those just a few years ago, an oil industry freebie. Saves on batteries. Cant remember if they have the potential to cause a spark or not......

Its was noted that people were forever leaving torches on after use and draining the batteries so wind up torches were the answer.

Of course the ultimate "wind up" technology is in wind farming. And I imagine there is no place like the Philippines for wind potential..........

    And great for the environment.

"MANILA, Philippines - The first wind farm in the Cordillera region and the second in Southeast Asia will soon rise in Mountain Province.

Renewable energy firm PhilCarbon is developing a 15-MW wind farm in the boundary of Besao and Sagada towns with the support of host indigenous communities".

“The reason for the support is that the pro-ject is non-polluting, it does not destroy the environment and it benefits the community”, said PhilCarbon chairman Rufino Bomas-ang.

You're going to have to really want that soda to go to all that effort! Imagine all the smokers wheezing and having heart attacks just trying to get at their next fix

I guess thats it. Its a hot evening at the railway station. The kiosk and cafe is closed and you are parched. You go to the vending machine and damn, the power has failed.......
