"As a surfer and scuba diver, people think I am the least likely candidate to champion sharks. But it is precisely because I feel a deep connection to the ocean – to nature – that I fight for their rights. To see a nurse shark sleeping in a cave or to glimpse at the sleek shape of a black tip while it glides past some coral never gets old. And yes my heart begins beating faster whenever someone says they’ve spotted a fin in the water when I am surfing. I do not claim to be unafraid. Sharks freak me out, I wont lie about that. But that is no reason for me to think it is okay for their slaughter to continue.
In the Philippines, a trade in shark’s fins runs rampant and unchecked. Sharks are gathered and killed in areas as close as Real, Quezon and as far as the Babuyan Islands. Its fins are lopped off, its liver cut out and the rest of the shark is left to die a slow and agonizing death either on the sand or as it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. The photos that accompany this entry are from a fellow advocate named A.G. Sano who is one of the leading voices in the campaign to conserve and preserve our marine habitats and creatures. In his own words: “I was with the humpback whale research team when we found sharks being slaughtered on the beach in Cagayan, near Aparri. There were about 16 of them. Then in a few minutes, another boat came with about 32 more dying sharks. They were butchered in front of us and the fishermen told us the fins will be brought to (a restaurant) in Manila while the livers will go to Taiwan.”

LOL. I am like a fish out of water, in water. I was always hopeless at the aptly named HUET Survival School in Aberdeen. I have a special empathy for and suffice to say a loose connection with the Save The Philippines Seas campaign.no i already had signed the yahoo petition before posting that one on here,

yes we should as humans be the caretakers of sea and land creatures, and anything that grows, if we dont we loose it to extinction,it has a knock on effect to everything else in the chain,theres been so much lost already, the seal culling sickend me, that was the first i saw of anything like that on such a cruel scale, on film i saw not live thanks god, but it hit home on my feelings about these terrible deeds

Tell you what. I dont miss the Aberdeen sea gulls. One species I would gladly see extinct.
me too they are like rats with wings, but people feed them despite being warned, it brings them further inland, scavengers , they will swoop and snatch from you your food

Actually, where I was working in Dyce, my previous employer used to fire guns at the time they were nesting (springtime), to frighten them away. Such was there nuisance value. Sometimes they have been known to swoop on folk.
they do swoop, iv been attacked for my hot dog just at the foresterhill hospital main entrance, second swoop i punched it as it got close enough to my head,
previous work i was doing satellite installations, roof tops in aberdeen , wicked they protect their nests , isnt a safe place to be
they are wicked beasts, i prefer crows at least all they do is squak and pooh on your head as you pass the under the trees, now they are clever, some say they are spirits,
i have large trees at the back of my house where hundreds of then nest, they are good alarms at night if they hear anybody around, they make sure you hear
And boy, do they do that like cows.....
A lawmaker wants to criminalize the act of catching, selling and importing of sharks and stingrays in the country.
"Rep. Rex Gatchalian (1st District, Valenzuela City) filed House Bill 5880 making it unlawful for any person or corporation to catch sharks and stingrays in Philippine waters or to sell, purchase, possess, transport and export these endangered species.
Gatchalian said the measure also makes it unlawful to wound or kill sharks and rays, unless there is a threat to human life and limb, even in the course of catching other species of fish".
