I find a small screwdriver works a treat for removing those sharp fillings or jagged bits of old broken tooth....after putting through a flame of course.I have a dental appointment on monday to have one removed. Mines gone beyond the point of pain. I was on painkillers and antibiotics a couple of weeks back.
