Another scorcher but I took my son to see the movie The Hunger Games. Hadnt really heard of it before, special request from my son. And what a surprise I got. It was absolutely riveting. Whether you love or hate reality TV game shows you will like this one as it is a little different, where the winner retains their life and the other contestants die. Its a 12 so its not too "blood and guts". It scared the pants off Mrs Lastlid. The ex wife and daughter had read the book on Kindle and recommended it to my son.

Coincidently I read a newspaper article about 'Hunger Games'.

It said it's on target to break all records including the record for Hollywood's biggest box-office debut.

I never heard anything about it until today.

Post-apocalyptic action movie "The Hunger Games" opened with a staggering $155 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices, the highest domestic opening for a movie that isn't a sequel, and established what may become one of Hollywood's biggest blockbuster franchises.

Internationally, the Lions Gate Entertainment drama about an oppressive society's teen death match added $59.3 million from 67 markets for a global haul of $214.3 million.

The massive U.S. and Canadian debut for the film ranked as the third-highest domestic opening weekend in history behind only last summer's "Harry Potter" finale and 2008 Batman movie "The Dark Knight," Lions Gate said on Sunday.

It can be likened to Lord of the Flies, Arthur. And it has a 12 rating so there's very little in terms of gratuitous violence as such.

Once you have all read Johnnie Johnson's book via Kindle or whatever.......I see the top 3 paid Kindle books are The Hunger Games and its 2 sequels.

I am going to watch the movie again tonight.

I think that The Hunger Ganes is a good enough book for teenagers but it has two fundamental flaws. There is no attempt to indicate how the government obtained and how it retains its control. The same premise lies behind 1984 but that is believable because Orwell explains what the control is based on. The second flaw - I don't think that is too strong a word - is that there is very little character development. Odd people pop up but it is not easy to understand their minsets. I'm referring particularly to the two adult mentors. That said, I read the book and quite enjoyed it within its limitations. It's not a book that we shall be reading in twenty years time.

You're right, of course. But it just made me smile as it reminded me of what my old dad always used to tell me that no-one will have heard of the Beatles in 20 years time.

I've neither read the book nor seen the film. But sounds interesting, especially given the popularity.

I have seen the movie twice already.

I don't see eye to eye with my ex wife but one thing I hold my hand up to her for is her ability to judge a good book. I think she has been through at least 3 paperbacks a week for the last 45 years or so.

Having said that, I haven't read it. But the uptake on the movie has been off the back of the success of the book, which is hard to argue with.

Harry Potter bores me rigid. But I enjoyed this one.

I understand what you mean about fundamental flaws. But writers and music writers break the rules sometimes and get away with it. If it works, it works.

I must admit I saw this last week (taken in by the hype) and didnt find it that good. I do think the performances of the children acting was good, but the action and suspense I expected to see didnt materialise and I put this down to the certificate rating.
When it comes out on media I may watch again and see if I missed something but I actually found John Carter much more entertaining!

It just goes to show how we all see things so differently. Same for music I suppose. There's no denying its box office success, so somebody is obviously watching it. And there's no denying its success as a book or its 2 sequels. Horses for courses I guess. I wasn't affected by any hype, whether it was founded on book sales or not as it was a case of "Dad, will you take me to see the Hunger Games?"...."yes okay, whats it about?".....

Maybe Katniss didnt bare enough flesh for some?

I watched 3D Wrath of the Titans the other day. And I fell asleep in places. I have always liked a bit of Greek Mythology but this movie didn't captivate my interest.

I saw Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the Norwegian version) a few months back and enjoyed that.

I dont think I have managed to watch a Harry Potter movie all the way through yet, but have always loved the Lord of the Rings books and movies.

Salmon fishing in the Yemen. Watchable but nowhere near as enjoyable as The Hunger Games
