you know when its election time

France's turbulent five years under Nicolas Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy won a crushing election victory in 2007 and came to office promising a break with the past. Five years later he runs for re-election as the least popular president in recent French history.

French voters are more worried than most about the forces unleashed by the globalised economy, and found Sarkozy's brash style of little comfort as the financial crisis rocked the eurozone and threatened the French social model.

Now, he will be obliged to defend or at least to draw a veil over his record of five years in office, in the run up to the first round of the presidential election on April 22 and the second-round run-off on May 6.
