    I’m sure we all sympathise Moy, and hope your uncle does recover.
    Regarding the chances of recovery from coma, it really depends on the cause, general health and age of the patient.
    Here is a simple list of causes :-
    A = Accidents ( trauma OR Cerebrovascular = stroke ) or Alcohol excess
    E = Epilepsy
    I = Infection ( such as meningitis, malaria ) or Insulin ( diabetic coma )
    O = Overdose ( drugs )
    U = Unknown or Uraemia ( kidney disease )

    Whether he is at home or in hospital, the immediate priorities are to check airways and
    circulation. Vital signs are vital ! – including temperature and signs of injury. Full examination and history from family of how he became unconscious all help to establish the diagnosis and correct treatment. Blood tests ( sugar and looking for infection ) also help, as do chest X Rays and CT scan of head.
    I’m sure it is hard to handle this and concentrate – as you say – especially at a distance, and you may also be worried because treatment isn’t free. Please take care and let us know the outcome.

    I'm sorry to hear about your uncle Moy.. I know how you feel..My grandma had an accident 4 days before my wedding and she broke her hip and needed an operation for that..during those days, I kept on crying because I'm so worried about her and also my family on how they can cope, especially with the big hospital and operation costs..My focus on my wedding was split into half because of the worrying..my family was at the hospital during my wedding and they stayed there for 3 weeks..eventually my grandma had the hip replacement and is recovering now..I do hope that your uncle would get better and just be strong..God bless you and your entire family Moy.

    My condolences to you and your family Moy.

    As I have explained, the chances of recovery from coma depend on the cause, general health and age of the patient. We now know in your uncle’s case it was due to bleeding in the brain resulting from high blood pressure ( hypertension ).

    I would like ALL members reading this thread to think about having blood pressure checked – both on themselves and their relatives ( especially older ones ).

    ( see http://filipinaroses.com/showthread....e-ALL-have-it-! )

    It may help you to come to terms with this sad event, if you understand what caused your uncle’s illness. Please don’t feel pressurised to read this – what you DON’T want is an overload of information such as can be found elsewhere on the internet.

    1. Haemorrhagic stroke – such as happened to your uncle - occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures. Blood seeps into the brain tissue, causing damage to brain cells. About 1 in 5 strokes are of this type. The most common causes are hypertension and brain aneurysms. Hypertension can lead to weakening of the blood vessels in the brain, causing them to balloon and burst. An aneurysm is a weakness in the blood vessel wall that causes it to balloon outward.

    • Any type of bleeding inside the skull or brain is a medical emergency. It is important to get the person to a hospital as soon as possible to find the cause of the bleeding and start treatment.
    This minimizes damage to the brain and improves chances of recovery.
    Treatment involves surgical decompression of the brain to release pooled blood and repair damaged blood vessels. This is complicated and risky, indeed not always possible to perform.

    • A patient who remains in a coma or has been severely paralyzed after such a haemorrhage may well not survive, or at least need long-term nursing home care.
    • For a patient who regains consciousness, treatment may lead to substantial recovery, if their general health is otherwise good.
    2. The other, much commoner ( but less often fatal ) type of stroke is “ ischemic “ - like a heart attack, but involving blood vessels of the brain ( a "brain attack " ). This occurs when blood flow to an area in the brain is reduced, depriving brain cells of oxygen and glucose needed to survive.
    Once again, my condolences and we all hope you gain some comfort from the messages posted here by your friends.

    Thanks Arthur, I've remembered that list since I was a medical student, and have used it to teach student doctors and nurses .
