Hull does have its nice parts (I often work there), although the 'beach' is a bit muddy.
A friends Dad came from Hull he said the best thing he ever did was join the Fleet Air Arm to get away from the place - he did OK flew jets when we had proper carriers and finished up a senior British Airways Captain. Many parents and grown children have been on restrictive Work Permits for more than 20 years. If as expatriates they marry a Bermudian spouse, they must wait for 10 years to get Bermudian status and pay a hefty fee. In contrast, Bermudians can apply for a UK passport, get full United Kingdom and European citizenship immediately they get the passport and live, work, vote and buy any property they wish there. This one-sided arrangement was a British Government decision taken without any referendum from the British people.

i had a quick look on the net, as in the link, it looks very strict on how you get citizenship, married for 10yrs, if you can own land/property. must be at least 10yrs b4 you can apply for residency.
we should do the same to them and others from outside the uk.
Something doesn't seem quite right with this story, but I know that their immigration rules are quite strict and that residency / work permits are very much based around the employer.
A few of my friends have worked in Bermuda and apart from the long hours at work, life out there seems to be fantastic. Having said that, people tend to leave after 5 or 6 years. I guess that's long enough to save up some cash and enjoy the parties!
Actually, there's quite a few filipinos working there. It's where my friend met his wife!
Bermuda is an amazing place. I spent a couple of weeks there on holiday and had an amzing time. Although it's expensive, the whole island is clean, safe and great fun! I can understand why the guy is gutted to be sent back to Hull!

Have a drive around West Hull sometime (Swanland, West Ella, Kirk Ella, North Ferriby, parts of Hessle)...will put many places in Windsor or Cheshire's millionaires' district to shame. There were some very wealthy Trawler owners in times gone past.
I'm reminded of a time I went to do a survey on a property in Swanland, and after being let in through the electric gate I saw what appeared to be 2 large properties.
While I'm walking towards the smaller of the two the owner appears and tells me that it's the building at the front I need to look at. The other one (size of a row of terrace houses) was the garage.

Yes...Bransholme Estate (East Hull) is a bit scary after dark, but having said that I've worked in all parts of Hull over the past 35 years including late evenings (pub-closing) and never had any hassle.Ahh, I guess I am thinking too much of Bransholme et al.
