UKBA seems to be in the news everyday for the wrong reasons. Someone really needs to get to grips with it as this could become seriously embarassing around Olympic Time.
Sorry but it's a public facing uniformed arm of government, and it's almost what you could describe as semi-military - just like the police.
There are dress codes, and the staff should be aware of it. Of course I would prefer being able to clear customs in 3 minutes by a border staff wearing a mickey mouse t-shirt and bermuda shorts, but I shouldn't have to.
These staff should know they are expected to be smart, know it is a requirement of the job - and just do it.
If they don't like being told to turn up looking respectful, then there are many others out there who would like to do that job.
Moaning about it to the press is a bit childish huh.
Of course, if I was their management, I would just give them a warning and get them to work, not send them home. There has to be some common sense..............oh sorry, it's government agency, how could I suggest there be common sense, how silly of me
I do agree about them looking smart.
Yes, they should do...no excuses.
Polish and a bit of elbow grease are cheap enough.
Even the poorest of security guards in the Philippines is smart and obviously takes a pride in his /her appearance.
