Caught in English language test trap

    Hi.

OK, we foolishly assumed the fact my Rose speaks perfect English, has an Engineering degree and has built a career in English while living in Dubai would be sufficient to make the grade in English ability. However, reading further and finding this thread means she needs to take the test. Grrr

Of course we have to wait for weeks for the test date and then the results before applying for her Visa. Double Grrrr.

Lesson: Never assume, it makes an ASS out of U and ME

Yep. Unless it is at an approved Philippine University then a degree in English, taught in English from the Philippines doesnt seem to count either.

Don't feel bad about it, the South African wife of a colleague at work had to take the test despite being the child of English parents and speaking no other language...

    It's just more bureaucracy.

... that's a piece of nonsense, surely! Doesn't her parentage make her a British Citizen by descent?

Actually, no. You are a British citizen of born abroad to parents who are British citizens provided the father was born in Britain (a "patrial"). If not, not.

Thus my elder son, born in Manila, is a British citizen because I was born in Hammersmith, but if he has a child and that child is not born in Britain that child will not have British citizenship unless he takes certain precautions - not quite sure what these are but I seem to recall that there is a requirement to notify the Consul in the country concerned.

yes your sons children will not automatically be British citizens unless born in the Uk as your son is a British citizen by descent, thou they probably could become a British Citizen by registration or naturalization.
