Call me: Tech powers Philippines call centre success

"Kate McGeown visits a Manila call centre to find out how technology has helped make the industry so successful
When night falls in Manila, a wave of young people scurry into the skyscrapers which criss-cross the city.

They're call centre agents, and because most of their clients are on the other side of the world, the night shift is their busiest time.

Last year, with more than 600,000 call centre workers, the Philippines officially overtook India as the world's call centre capital."

Yes, Big Raffy emphased the fact that most in the Philippines speak English.

BTW I think Kate McGeown must be permanently resident out there...

Yes I was aware of this (used to train call centre staff myself for a couple of years).

I'm really pleased that the Filipino people are able to benefit from this kind of employment, which uses their natural skills, although the hours are likely to be long and pay possibly not brilliant.

    It's work !

When the young ladies from Virgin Media in Manila give me a call they're the only cold-callers I'm happy to chat to.

I'm presently working with Marvie's family in the Philippines on developing a form of BPO business on a similar theme, which hopefully will work out for us.

    Sounds interesting Ricky.
Will it be local or offshore based?

I've been slowly developing some similar ideas recently in readiness for my big move.

I did something similar in Japan for a number of years, but that's a totally different market and business environment.
