Moneysavingexpert.com has a foreign exchange calculator showing the cheapest way to buy money for your particular circumstances.

The last 2 times I ended up buying peso from NatWest over the phone, collecting from my nearest branch.

However, if I can walk into the embassy (which embassy?) with £100 and walk out with 7200 peso, I'll try that in future!

Unfortunately its the other way round. Consular services are quoted in good old British £s so anything that so costs £100 is calculated locally at the British Embassy rate of P7200 instead of the more touristy P6500. Its more funds in the Philippines.
