The Tories are becoming the 'nasty party' on immigration

    another good article

The manifesto commitment could hardly have been clearer: the Conservatives were going to make Britain the most family-friendly country in Europe. "We need good, strong families to help our society work well," they declared. "We will support families to stay together." Their coalition partners agreed, pledging to give every family the support needed to thrive.

I believe this policy to be evil! Who are they to say husband and wife can't be together it's a fundamental human right yet poorer couples will be separated like criminals.
Also how can they say 18600 is the amount needed to live off? I could live comfortably on less. Also 18600 is below the starting wage for many state jobs including ambulance drivers, teaching assistants, police call handlers and many more. The big stick I'll thought out headline grabbing policies make me so angry.

I'm sure that focussing on tighter border controls, deportation of illegals, criminals and bogus students would be a more fruitful and popular strategy than a narrow target against bona fida couples and families.

    Just my opinion

If £18600 is what the government says we need to live off that should be the national minimum wage then.

I think the real issue here is that once people are in the UK the government is powerless to stop them claiming benefits and milking our tax money. That is the real issue. If people were able to be in the UK and not be supported by the state then this rule would not even be thought of.

unless the 'immigrant' has ILR they are not allowed to claim benefits in thier own name, if they have prosecute them

what can be done is certain benefits can be claimed by the British partner if they are eligible to claim, then they have a legal right to claim that benefit, but thats a british citizen claiming not an 'immigrant' claiming

my wife knows many filipino's who are struggling and have been for years paying taxes and are not allowed to claim benefits, not even for child care.
