    Made in the Philippines

My wife decided to make a chocolate cake for our up and coming wedding anniversary and decorate it accordingly. We found a shop (not so easy these days) that sold a reasonable range of cake decorations. She selected some miniature edible roses as part of the decoration and to our surprise we discovered they were made in the Philippines. Nice to see Philippine products in the shops.

My son was made in the Philippines.

The ex-Mrs must have caught me during an unguarded Xmas moment.

Just before Christmas we bought a tall floor standing lamp from BHS, made from what looks like raffia, or some sort of palm leave material.

When we got it home it was also "made in the Philippines"

My elder son was Made in the Philippines; the younger one was Made in England. Come to think of it, I was Made in Baghdad, but I've never bothered with that passport!

Our local delicatessen, where we can indeed buy cake decorations that are Made in the Philippines, as well as Sky Flakes, etc., is owned by a Filipina lady.

I've often thought there must be business opportunities importing things from the Philippines, but never quite decided what!

I would have thought so. Problem is transportation costs?

My friend used to get baseball caps made up there with the name of specialist clubs etc embroidered into them, but sent them over here himself to make sure they actually arrived.

Yeah, we can get them from our local Chinese supermarket.

My son used to insist on them...until I sneaked 11p Tesco ones into his food and he admitted they weren't any different.

    Happy days.

Many of Clarks shoes are made in the Philippines, but the ridiculous thing is that they cost more in the Philippines then thy do in the UK, and I'm lead to believe they are exported to the UK and reimported....

Many of the products and electronics that are produced in the Philippines cannot be procured there locally.

Funnily enough that, I was in Gaisano Mall in Cebu when I saw a shelf full of Asda Face Paints, and when I googled them discovered that they had been recalled and banned in the UK for being toxic! Obviously the manufacturer in the Philippines had decided to sell them locally.

My wife, before she left the Philippines, bought her nephew a TOP GEAR t shirt from a shop in Dasmarinas complete with a picture of Stig on. Is Top Gear shown over there or are the Top Gear T shirts manufactured in the Philippines and then shipped over here?

Top Gear is available in the Philippines and in fact most countries in the world. But I would imagine that shirt was probably most likely one produced for the UK market.

It's a disgrace making them in low overhead factories then still charging grossly inflated premium prices, they followed the lead of M & S who will produce goods in whatever that weeks cheapest sweatshop is. After my son grew out of kids sizes I've boycotted Clarks. Buy kids shoes in Asda - you know they're foreign but are below £20 a pair

I thought they were produced in Thailand & China - if you look at this webpage they are coy about naming specific countries http://www.clarks.co.uk/HistoryandHeritage_1990-present only some flannel about starting overseas in Portugal.

    I'm trying to back Britain

    That reminds me.

The cost of the gaffa tape holding my slippers together now appears to have exceeded the cost of a new pair of slippers.

True, but that is no compensation for my oversight.

I may have to look into adapting my flip flops so that they can be worn with socks.

...or even my diving shoes that I haven't actually ever used. Hmm.

Last time I rented some boots.

Small La Laguna, Puerto Galera, Mindoro.

Marine reserve, and the snorkelling is fantastic just yards off the beach.
