Was that a tax rebate or tax credit?

    Good question....

A tax rebate is a refund of tax already paid, but overpaid.

A tax credit is tax already paid that is given back to you if you qualify under certain criteria, but not overpaid.

    Slightly different.

I am due it. I just have to fill out my tax return form. I am due back tax overpaid on an allowance for my maintenance payments to my ex wife and on tax overpaid on behalf of my current wife - we are allowed to pool the married womans allowance with the married mans allowance here.

I dont know if there is a UK tax allowance for maintenance paid to an ex wife. I live in the Isle of Man where taxation is different to mainland UK.

The tax allowance for my current wife isn't claimable in the UK but is claimable in the Isle of Man.

If you're taxed at source no choice about tax payments.

But.......always so noce when you get back the tax you paid too much of.

Very much in the news just now with some folks who are not taxed at source and decide to not pay what we all must.

Most self-employed people with decent accountants do the same...albeit on a smaller scale.
The accountant's fees are tax-deductible, so may as well get a good one.

When I was self-employed my accountant drove a new Rolls Royce and was originally recommended to me by some wealthy friends.

Even on PAYE one can overpay in tax.

I paid an accountant about £200 about 12 years ago, long before I moved to the Isle of Man and got £7000 back in refunded tax. Not tax avoidance or evasion, just getting back what was rightly mine.

not much but better in your pocket than Carrs or someone else.. just sent mine off

    Work uniform tax rebates

If you wear a uniform to work - whether just a simple polo shirt with a logo on it, or full attire eg, nurses, policemen – and have to wash, repair or replace it yourself, you may be able to reclaim tax of £100s, overpaid in the past four years.
