It was my understanding that if you had a spare tyre in your car when it went through the MOT test though, it had to be legal.

I always leave mine at home anyway to get rid of the dead weight. - Just carry a can of tyre inflater and my AA card.

The spare tyre is not part of the MOT. You can have a bald tyre with wire hanging out or no spare at all. I lot of people like Graham carry a can.
