What a load of flannel
"The following day we got together everybody's passports and visas like we should have had to check the details. In short, we've learned our lesson."
The only way they'll learn their lesson will be by hitting them with the £10000 fine
Honestly, they had to have known..it doesn't need special training to read a passport!
The employers here are the guilty ones, they should be shafted big time for this...the £ 100000 fine, as suggested looks appropriate
Idiot employers.
I'll bet there's a fair few British overstayers in the Phils too.
I know there are!
Actually where many employers come unstuck is that they feel awkward asking every recruit to produce a birth certificate or passport; if someone presents as "British" or "has been here a long time" they are worried that they may be accused of racisim if they ask for proof of right of abode.
My previous employer was pretty sharp on all this kind of thing and made sure that they didn't trangress the law on using immigrants. It was / is more than their reputation is worth. They did / do hire from within and outside of the EEC but ensure that it is legally watertight.
I would like to say they're mugs for risking an "up to £10000 fine" for failing to provide evidence that legally required checks were carried out. But as these fines are rarely imposed they are shrewd operators keeping their costs down and putting their law abiding competitors out of business.
I wrote to Theresa May yesterday asking why the UKBA website is now so eager to brag about raids on places of business and nabbing illegals but never has any reports about fines actually collected in
have you ever put a request using the freedom of information request dedworth ??

Did that back in March Joe got some very derisory figures for 2009 - 11 from the UKBA it probably costs more to collect the fines than the amount pulled in. I've been in contact with another MP with a strong interest in illegal immigration, who was very interested in them.............
Exactamundo Graham...I said that in my initial post on this thread....ie..doesn't need much training to read a passport ...lets be honest, any ol numty could do that...and as for employers upsetting a possible employee by asking for his passport well, like you said, its what they are mean't to do.
ALL employers must do the legal checks.
I can tell you that ALL registered employers have been sent a number of letters informing them of their legal responsibilities in connection with this.
Absolutely no excuse
They should be penalised. IMO
i thought repeat offending employers faced going to prison, i think i recall one did but he might have been doing time because he couldn't pay the fine
