I have a possibly controversial theory about the enthusiasm of Moslem men from the South Asian subcontinent for brides from "the old country".
It seems to me that the trouble starts with Granny. She came to Britain years ago, never learned the language, never moved outside the circle of people who spoke her own language. She was no doubt a good housewife and a careful mother. But her own daughters have learned English and with it British ideas. No matter; they will leave home anyway. But what if her sons marry such hoydens? Who will take care of her in her old age? She needs a reliable daughter in law to tend on her every whim. Where to get one? From the old country, of course. So her sons are encouraged to marry girls from the home village...
Seems to have created an ironic situation amongst the Pakistani Brit fraternity...
