Noooooo we will get some medals lastlid dont worry. There is probably more people in the Uk than there has ever been but unfortunatly most of our immigrant population do not play sports. You would think we would have a great hockey team though.

Before the games started I would have said USA to continue at the top of the gold medal table.
Now even just 1 day into it China has already taken some 'unexpected' golds'
Even in those events where China has not previously figured, they look top top quality.

China has been developing it's sports teams to extraordinary levels now for more than 3 Olympic Games.

All part of their world domination

Personally I expect China to pip USA this year.

I think China and the USA have rather larger resources of people to draw upon than us.

china will do well and probably finish above the USA, one major reason why they probably will, will be because they hosted the last Olympic games so many of the Athletes China spent money on will be at these games to

Despite it's size the U.S has only roughly around five times as many residents as the U.K

    I agree.

I think all our athletes and all involved in the organisation and staging of the event will deserve a big pat on the back at the end of this.

I've been struck by the wonderfully gracious behaviour of all Team GB and their absolute dedication to be the best they can be.

These are true role models in my opinion.

Olympic success: How much does a gold medal cost?

"How much does an Olympic gold medal cost? With a minimum six grams of gold and a large chunk of silver, the pithy answer is about £450.

But as Britain basks in the glory of what is shaping up the to be the most triumphant Olympics for Team GB in more than 100 years, it is worth reflecting for a moment on the reasons behind the success.

Talent, punishing training regimes, pride in a home games and fervent support have of course played a key part in so many record-breaking performances.

But, in the end, as cynical and unpalatable as it may sound, the main reason behind the team's overall success is cold, hard cash.

I believe our annual 'sports' budget is £100 million...this for what is massively important to the health of our children.

How much do we currently donate to countries like India and Pakistan each year ?

Some very strange priorities in this country it seems to me.

I think everyone recognises that the major contributor is down to how much money is invested. But there are other contributions as well.

These increased investments have not happened overnight. It's been going on for over 15 years.
As the link above states, most has come from direct funding by the National Lottery with the taxpayer donating a mere 80p per year.

It's not a huge amount of money in the scheme of things, but just look at the many 'spin-offs' with so many new facilities all over the country, so many more opportunities for all of us to get involved in sports/leisure activities, so many opportunities for kids to experience great faciltites, great clubs and great coaching.
What a fantastic way to help improve the health and wellbeing of a nation.

Well that' just my 2 centavos worth.

Olympics cycling: Marginal gains underpin Team GB dominance

Quite a funny article on this question. Lord Hoy discussed this on the beeb last night too....

"So the secret of British cycling's success is taking your own pillow with you when you travel, and cleaning your hands properly.
Sorry, Dave, but that's not going to wash with the opponents you have just steamrollered for the second Games in succession. They want cheating, they want witchcraft, they want an excuse.

The day before, French newspaper L'Equipe had run a story based on claims of skulduggery from Isabelle Gautheron, the French team's boss.
She said the British were supposed to be using the same wheels her team got from the French company Mavic, but they could not be the same because the Brits were going so much faster than her riders.
When asked about these "magic" wheels, Brailsford told L'Equipe they were "round".
And yet still the vanquished were not satisfied.

Well, they always used to say that the french never wash. Maybe that little bit makes the odd 10th of a second difference over a few laps.

Even now there is very serious research of how to stretch for ultimate performance by looking at optimum 'human anatomy'.
