Some seem to think giving houses of this calibre to council tennants are uncommon....its not!

Its just most people are good hard working law abiding types who keep there heads down and get on with life...black and white while living in there council given mansions.

Like I said before..if ya dont like the council housing where you are now...put in for an exchange the Fulham and Chelsea borough council....you gotta be in it to win it

maybe or some advisor or someone knows the rules , i had a lot of getting the place i have now, and I had to wait nearly a year - and thats with me being a British citizen, working and paying taxes all my working life, born in the area and having kids, the council took the to they know the rules and delaying tactics.

Also, don't forget that all the council tenants who are booted out (anti-social behaviour etc) are re-housed in private rented, so you'll find streets of such accommodation that are worse than some of the roughest council estates.

dont forget if they have kids the council has a legal duty to house them

i have a sisiter who knows every trick to claim, her husband has never worked in his life, and all there 4 children have never worked also, but they too have been taught well from there parents,yes blame the system, but i know where i would rather be, but if you dont know any differance what hope is there

those who go by the rules have to wait a long time, those who know the rules and bend them take the short cut to the front

I'm not having a go, accusing anyone of being grasping, I'd hazard a guess nearly every buy to letter isn't the "grasping" sort, because there just isn't the money to be made (Unless you are talking about student accommodation...............now you can really rake it in here, but that's a different story).

I have also heard the so called "flip side", where landlords have whined on forums and in newspapers about tenants from hell, not paying their rent, not looking after their property, the property having periods of unlet time when the mortgage still needs paying etc.
Strangely enough, when they are asked the question "if it's so bad, why not just sell up then"..........they go suddenly very quiet

The whole thing is the moral side. These people with their "investments" are buying up properties in nice areas, and usually areas where decent hard working people live, managing to get their first or second homes. Not all renters are idiots of course, but a fair proportion either are, or just don't have the interest in the neighbourhood to give a stuff, compared to owner occupiers.

I have heard too many first hand examples of the mess this can cause to people's lives, including my own street.

These people are in affect turning private respectable hard working neighbourhoods into council estates.

Again I will say, I bet THEY don't live next to properties owned by buy to letters

Any sane landlord is aware of the risks involved in renting properties to the DHSS. Many avoid it for the problems that occur, it would be naive to assume that it would be returned in perfect condition.

I agree, many do avoid but, I'll say many do do it becoz of the guaranteed income over years...the landlords accept the houses will be go as rubbished when they eventually get it back but, it will be put right by the council....these letters are not emotionally attached like most home owners..I was once, its just a means to earn.

I agree with what Ian said about letters letting to unsuitable tenants thus destroying communities ...which is hardly the intention. Its just a possible consequence of what rarely happens......luckily where I live, many are let , let to good people...goodness, we put Christmas cards in eachothers letter boxes...that certainly is a rarity in these changeable times.
