duty free allowance fills to uk ?

ok im british, i know im allowed to take 200 cigarettes from fills to uk but lets say i want to take 1000 cig's, the law says i can only take 200 as duty free, but if i take 1000 and want to go to things to declare and pay duty is that legal ? i mean can i actualy take 1000 cigs from fills and just declare them on arrival in uk ? or do i have to declare them also in NAIA (manila international airport) ? or is this a strict rule i cant take more than 200 through NAIA ? im confused on the filipino law's as when i took more than 200 before i was stopped by a security guard at xray belt and told i have too many cigs ? i said yes i know and im willing to take the chance in uk airport ? and he said you have to pay tax ? i reply i will pay tax / duty in uk ? he said no you have to pay tax ere also ? but i know you all know what happened next hehe i asked how much is the tax ? he reply = ITS UPTO YOU ? with a sly poke in the back from his big gun ? so im still wondering what is the real rule ? do i have to pay tax in fills and declare or is it really a scam for the security guards ?

If I had a gun pointing at my back I would pay the tax in the phils . To be honest mate I dont know. Personally I wouldnt take any chances.

few years ago..the husband took 3 rim of marlboro cig from Davao city..we have stop over at singapore before heading to the UK he was stop and ask to show how many cig he carrying they ask if he want to pay tax he chose none and the cig been slash to garbage

I've never been bothered in any way by customs either end, probably because of my winning smile, eagerness to please, and bag full of smelly socks and underpants.

if u bring back more than 200 and declare them in the red channel there will be a fair amount of excise duty and tax to pay to HMRC so not worth the effort in my opinion.

Moral of the story. Don't buy the said duty free goods in the Philippines. Buy them en route....

But like Malchard says, if you try and pay the duty on excess goods at UK customs then they will probably be more expensive than if you bought them in a shop in the UK.

i was going to buy my brother some cigs in the phils on my last trip in April but didn't have time, we bought some from the Airport in Singapore and the shop assistant said if we had bought them in the phils SIA wouldn't allow us to take them on the plane

I bought 200 benson and hedges in the duty free in Singapore Changi airport last September, just £11 for 200, that was a real bargain

The last time I did that was in 1997 and I seem to recall they were £6.00 then. By far the cheapest I had seen in those days. (I fed my ex wife's smoking habit btw)

I used to buy a couple of 1,000 from the local supermarket in the Phils...tenth of the price here.

Kept me coughing for a good few weeks back here, but my workmates always asking if it was horse manure I was smoking.

If my memory serves me correctly you are not allowed to take any duty free cigarettes into Singapore so i suspect thats why SIA took them off you.

Last time I was in Changi my dad was getting 'Players Navy Cut' cigs...issued by the Royal Navy, and Changi was an RAF base where we used to go and watch inter-services sports competitions.

I came back with 7x 200 through Singapore cigs in my luggage, so had no problems there as my bag was forwarded on to the next plane. My thoughts with buying them in the Phils at about 150 peso per 200 for (Fortune) local brand, I was prepared to lose 1400 cigs and still be quids in even if I was left with 200.

my hubby did not encounter any problem bringing 5 reams of cigs,what he did was put 2 reams on his hand carry bag and spread out the rest on his luggage,worked out perfectly well

The same happened to me at Manila airport

when they x ray your bags just before you get inside the airport they are on the lookout for cigarettes
next you are taken to the desk where a policemen will ask you how many cigarettes you have
he then asks for your passport and asks where you are traveling to
next he will demand a bribe to let you go through "something for me and the boys"
i paid 500 but he was demanding 2000 pesos......................
i was close to giving him all the cigarettes but on second thoughts i thought they might try and plant something on me if i did that

its basically just another manila airport scam = you have more than 200 so they demand a bribe

i got wise to it and buy all my cigarettes in Hong Kong on the way back = around £12 for 200

I recently used Clark airport and no hassles there with over 1000 in my bags

Good idea, but need to use a sturdy case, lest they get squashed en route.....

And a little bit risky if they lose your baggage

when I came back I had 600 but 400 were split and thrown around the suitcase - some of them with 1 or 2 cigs missing from each packet

doesn't mater what u do

if you declare them they will cost you just as much
if you dont declare and you get caught you loose them all

I was lucky - just remember all the border patrol type programs on tv now!! they tell you what they look for

UK Border Force need to have reason to stop you - I know this next site is referring to bringing tobacco related products from mainly Europe but it does also give you an insight to how the Border Force work!
