As I expected, most of the comments are in the defence of the dog.

In this case a breed usually owned by irresponsible peanut brains who view their pets as another tattoo, with the added advantage of it also being an offensive weapon.
Any collateral damage such as the ripping to pieces of a neighbour's child's face is of little consequence to such scumbags.

I would like to see all 'fighting' breeds phased out, dog licensing re-introduced and only approved breeders being able to produce more dogs (and cats)....of any breed.

I'm not ashamed in any way to admit to being an animal lover and I did find this news item upsetting. Despite the fact that the police officer most likely had reasonable grounds to be frightened enough to react in that way. But you can't blame the animal imo

I tend to agree with what Graham has said about owners these days, which is very sad really.
When I was between the ages of 0-9 yrs we had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier as one of many of our family pets. He was a beautiful, gentle and affectionate dog.
I'm not going to say 100% predicatable, but then neither are our parents or any living being.

The owner Symieon Robinson-Pierre might not have had his day in court

No, the dog was not at fault. It was frightened and intimidated and should not have been put into such a situation.

It was also equipped to do a lot of damage to equally innocent human bystanders and IMO the police officer took the correct course of action given the circumstances., however 'sad' (using human emotions here) for the animal.

The fault lies with the human idiot tramp, who unlike the dog, has a free will. Also with the authorities who permit animals to live on the streets like this. We've all seen them.

Where is the RSPCA...or in this case, the American equivalent ? No 'home check' for vagrants' pets ?

we got a dog from the local dogs home a few weeks ago, no home visits just fill in a form and pay the fee and within 15 mins we were gone, thou some dog homes do carry out home visits first.

So how do they know you're a responsible 'owner' ?

they dont, i suppose they make a judgement when they see you, saw were a family rather than some yob,

plus the dog my daughter picked was a X terrier hardly going to maul anyone.
    similar to this dog

i suppose they dont have the resources to do home visits they get alot of dogs in to be re-homed. - they also give you up to 30 days to bring it back .

    How irresponsible is that ?

The animals could be abused, used for breeding, fighting, bait for fighting dogs etc...then returned as unsuitable.

That's a Border Terrier by the looks of it...one of my favourite breeds.

When we adopted our guinea pigs in RSPCA in Colwyn Bay, they had to ask us first about photos of our guinea pig cages, where it's located, our garden, our green house, etc. They didn't go and check our house though, but they do that according to their adoption site. And I can tell you, our place is a guinea pig haven!

I've just read that the knuckle dragger who owned the dog that attacked the 5 Met Police was convicted the other week and is in custody awaiting sentence - a pity they can't just throw him to the dogs
