    Thumbs up Holiday in Somerset

Its been a week or so since my last peek in this forum and I must admit I did miss reading posts and leaving comments.

Anyway, last week me and my fiance along with his family went to Somerset to spend a week of holiday in Butlins Minehead. Except from visiting Somerset (went in Yeovil last year) and drinking their lovely cider it was all first to me, the traditional family camp, playing with the 2p machines, seeing an old steam train working and the lovely boats in Watchet. I have also seen the jetty where the poor Dylan Cecil slipped away (poor little thing) and the offering of the people for the boy at Burnham-on-Sea.

T'was a great experience and I definitely enjoyed it and hoping to do it again with my family in future. Will post some photos soon.

Glad you had a good time here in Somerset!

The West Somerset Railway is a real gem. I love all the old engines and how the stations look 100 years old with the old signs, suitcases, etc. We often take a day trip from Taunton on the train and have cream teas in Minehead or Watchet.

You will love the Isle of Man then. They never upgraded here. And horse drawn tram also.

Did you go to Wookey Hole? The UK answer to the caves in Palawan?

We went there a few years ago, not impressed. Plastic dinosaurs outside, some goon dressed up as a witch, a tacky hole owned by Gerry Cottles Circus which just about sums it up.

Not a patch on the caves at Cheddar Gorge.

Regarding Somerset/Minehead I've always enjoyed driving up the Porlock toll road onto Exmoor, lovely part of the country.

Wookey Hole. Britains finest. The caves in the peak district, Castleton etc are a little less commericialised.

And of course Cheddar Gorge. Did you go there, Melovesengland?

I passed thru Cheddar Gorge just a few weeks ago.
The idea was to have a quick (1-2hrs) look around the caves, then continue our journey.

Firstly, parking is a nightmare.... but if you get there about 9.00am the carpark is unmanned and you're home & dry (also no provision for tickets or clamps).

Secondly, it's now a "full" ticket that they sell, which is really a full 4-6hr tour of the caves, Jacob's Ladder, and the clifftop walk. No provision to just pay for the caves.

So we had breakfast there gave the caves a miss, and drove to Stonehenge.

    Re: Butlins....
every summer/Xmas season I worked there in my school/student years.
Worked in the Entertainments Dept (not a Redcoat !) as a stagehand, rigger, lighting technician, stage manager (of Pig & Whistle Bar .... does this still exist in Minehead ?), and part time film projectionist.

I think I had more disposable income then than now !
.... and a new influx of female campers would arrive every week.
    Heaven.

mmmmm where did it all go wrong ?
No man is an island, but Barry is

There is no more PIG and Whistle bar now there. REDS, Inn on the green and Centre Stage are the most places we hang out at night. Redcoats are nice, very energetic!
