Yep. Thats how the cockle pickers get caught out, further up the coast in Morecambe Bay. Weren't they illegal immigrants too?

Yes. The sands slope away at a low gradient. We were drilling wells off Blackpool and quite a way out to sea and yet the water was only 45ft deep at mean tide.

Reminds me of a place in Bembridge (Isle of Wight) where you could only cross the bay at low tide, along a kind of causeway. Dont know if it is there now. At high tide the causeway would be below water.

Also at the causeway to Holy Island in Northumberland.

Many reports about people stranded after ignoring the warning about high tides

I think I know where it was, but it is dangerouse becouse the estury that discharges there becomes a very narrow fast flowing 8 foot wide strech or so of water, then when the tide comes in it rushes the other way.

There are also unoffical walks held to the wartime offshore forts when the tides are low enough, only a short period every year.

    Mick.

Twas a long time ago, Mick, about 30 years ago. I remember crossing it as a kid. We used to go to Bembridge each year for about 3 or 4 years.

There is a strong connection with Lindisfarne and the Isle of Man via the Solway Firth. Basically the line along which England and Scotland became "welded" together a few years back.

I'd love to go on one of those Solent forts - not so sure about the unofficial walk though !

The Coastgards do always know about them and keep an eye open, some when they have left it too late can end up up to their waist in water
I have not done them either
