£1 million 20 years ago was a considerable amount but nowdays carries no guaranteed benefits for the country. Needs to be considerably ramped up in my opinion

But consider for the Tier 1 investment visa you need £2,000,000 to start with and then £1,000,000 you invest is tied up until the visa expires/you get citizenship.
