£1m buys foreign investors right to live in Britain

money is not everything but it can get you in the UK and settlement in a couple of years

Foreign millionaires are flocking to use a little-known immigration scheme that allows wealthy individuals to jump to the top of the queue for permanent residency.

Considerably less buys you a green card in the USA. Most countries have similar investment visa schemes, and its something that should be encouraged. Most countries link the scheme to a certain amount of sustainable employment.

Why? People that bring in money, investment, jobs should be welcomed shouldn't they? Much better then people who come in to use the public services and take advantage of the welfare state.

Absolutely agree Ricky..oh, thanks for the rep 29 September ...I only just found out!

Yes, it should be encouraged...goodness, even the Philippines accept this method. If you ask me it makes sound business sense.

Actually the mockery is folks coming here from all 4 corners of the globe expecting the British tax payer to shoulder there burden.

As it says it's been in place for a long while - threshold obviously needs ramping up - I'm pretty sure a similar set up applies in Oz, NZ etc

Think about why immigration exists, its essentially racism. The principle is to prevent your country being overun by undesirables such as those who cannot afford to live in the country.
In most countries you can obtain residency by several methods such as; having skills that the country desires, bringing in investment, having exceptional talent, by being able to invest in the country or through family/marriage.

The stipulations linked to investment visas bring benefits to everyone, and many of the people coming in on investment visas aren't wealthy bankers, but business people who have worked hard to earn a living for themselves and bring jobs to other people.

The population of the UK isn't increasing anywhere near as rapidly as people assume, emmigration from the UK is also at a high level (not as much as immigration, but nonetheless still high). The problem is that the immigration that has occurred in the UK in the last 15 years hasn't been skilled people who can contribute to society, rather its people that a burden to the public services. It's nice to be charitable and allow people regardless of nationality the opportunities to work in the UK, but the last 15 years has proven that you can't just open up the borders freely.

Bring in skilled people, bring in money, bring in employers, let the country prosper.

Couple this with kicking out the scum, extremists, criminals and wasters and we might get back to being a decent place to live

£1 million 20 years ago was a considerable amount but nowdays carries no guaranteed benefits for the country. Needs to be considerably ramped up in my opinion

But consider for the Tier 1 investment visa you need £2,000,000 to start with and then £1,000,000 you invest is tied up until the visa expires/you get citizenship.

Sounds like a pretty bad investment proposal to me..I`ll give it 20 years until they think of something else...
Hopefully I`ll be dead by then.
